My personal view is the following : When a person dies, if he/she has not regained an immediate birth in what ever the realm according to his past karmas , Ex.in realms such as Diviya loka, (Realm of gods) Manushya Loka (Realm of humans) Bhootha Loka (realm of ghosts) Sathva loka (Realm of Animals) etc. His/her soul stays in an intermediate temporal state, called Bardo, (Gandhabbha) looking for an opportunity take a birth. But if he/she was already born (conceived, meaning taken the possession of an embryo ) in the Realm of humans or animals , you can not help the person. Too late for that, but , any other state, certainly , you can help him/her by doing virtuous deeds, such as giving alms, helping the needy and poor donating blood or helping sick and also doing religious ceremonies of what ever your faith, thus you collect good Karmas and you can transfer those good merits to the diseased by saying "I transfer those merits to my father/mother ect. as I did those good things in his/her behalf", like one candle can light the other without diminishing the light of the original flame, the merits or the good karmas can be transferred to an another soul provided that the other is willing and happy to accept it from you. That is the only way you can help.
